Chilean artist Guillermo Lorca is known for his large-scale oil paintings that combine romance and dark decadence in surreal, dreamlike fantasies. At 16, he trained with famous Chilean painter Sergio Montero. Later on, he attended art school. And although he eventually dropped out, Lorca explains, “I didn’t want to destroy my imagination and resources as an artist.”

Instead, Guillermo Lorca continued his self-taught practice and became a master in the school of life. Wanting to push his technique even further, Lorca moved to Norway to complete an apprenticeship with contemporary master Odd Nerdrum. Lorca fell in love with the layered, expressive atmospheres Nerdrum created in his work. During this time, Lorca also developed a deeper appreciation for the techniques of Old Masters like Velázquez, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and the Romantic painter Gustave Doré.

Romanticism is an artistic, literary, musical, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe in the late-18th century/early 19th century. The Romantic movement is characterised by an emphasis on emotion and feelings linked to spirituality, imagination, mystery, and passion.
