Daniel Arsham – Lunar Garden

Lunar Garden
2024
Installation

Step into Lunar Garden, a space conceived by contemporary artist Daniel Arsham and created as a site-specific immersive installation at Moco Museum London. Lunar Garden is inspired by the artist’s fascination with traditional Japanese rock gardens – also known as “karesansui”, which are traditionally regarded as places for deep contemplation and philosophical pondering. Here, Arsham blurs the lines between past, present, and future with crystallising elements that appear to both blossom and decay.

As a colour blind artist, Arsham’s selective use of colour further enhances the surreal, dreamlike atmosphere. Known for his concept of “fictional archaeology,” he uses timeless symbols to explore the enduring nature of change and the layers of meaning in both the material and spiritual worlds.

Though Lunar Garden appears unchanged, it represents the cosmic balance between the temporary and the eternal, underscoring the unique relationship between humans and nature.
