Brian Donnelly, also known as KAWS, is an American artist, designer, and pop culture pioneer.

He began his art career as a graffiti artist, leaving his mark on trains and buildings with the letters K – A – W – S. When asked why, He said “I liked the sound, like a short, strong mark.”

In 1999, KAWS introduced the world to a character closely related to Mickey Mouse with X-ed-out eyes and gloved hands named COMPANION. At a first glance, the character seems joyful, but its weighed-down posture and hands covering its eyes, makes us wonder: what is it really feeling?

KAWS often remixes cartoon characters from pop culture and flips them to make us question the consumerism and mass media that shape our society.

In his paintings, KAWS often zooms in, allowing us to imagine what characters might live beyond the canvas borders.

The contemporary master continues to push the boundaries of art by exploring many mediums, from vinyl toys and furniture to monumental bronze sculptures and inflatables the size of landmarks. As a visual artist and cultural icon, KAWS has truly captured the world’s imagination. His universally beloved characters not only bring joy but also awareness to our planet and messages about the importance of friendship and love.
